About us
Data Against Feminicide is a collaboration between Catherine D’Ignazio (Data + Feminism Lab @ MIT), Silvana Fumega (ILDA) and Helena Suárez Val (Feminicidio Uruguay), who came together through a shared interest in feminicide data.
In August 2019, the three collaborators met to start developing ideas to build a project about feminicide data along has three key objectives:
- fostering an international community of practice around feminicide data
- developing tools to support the collection of feminicide data from media sources
- supporting efforts to standardize the production of feminicide data where appropriate
The aim of the project is not to collect or aggregate data, but rather to support and sustain the already existing practices of activists who care for femicide data in their own contexts.
Events
With the objective of gathering together the community of practice working on feminicide data, we host annual gatherings of the Data Against Feminicide community in November, programmed around the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
These events, which include interactive sessions, panels and workshops, allow us to support an incipient but growing community dedicated to better understanding, through data, how, where and why women are killed in Latin America and the Caribbean. The long term aim is to foster a community of practice, create connections, support each other, and build a common roadmap for action to continue developing the production of feminicide data and promote good data practices around feminicide.
The next meeting of our community of practice will take place on November 26 at 12PM (UTC-3). Read the full programme here.
Tools to support the collection of feminicide data from media sources
We are currently leading a participatory action research project designed to help sustain activist efforts to collect feminicide data by partially automating detection using machine learning and other tools.
