Most conversations about technology focus on what is new: a new tool, a new project, a new grant. But much less attention goes to what happens afterwards. Who keeps a project going once the funding ends? Who maintains the database, trains new users, updates the documentation, and keeps the relationships with the communities the tool was built with?
For this year’s DCF event around the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, we want to talk about what it takes to keep feminist data projects and technologies going over time. That means talking about maintenance, care and governance, but also about all the day-to-day work that is essential to these projects and often goes unseen.
In this interactive workshop, we will explore what it takes to sustain a project over time, particularly when it involves technological development. Who decides what happens to a tool in the long term? How do we find resources not only to create new things, but to maintain what already exists? And what happens to the technology, the knowledge, and the relationships built around a project when the funding ends?
We hope the session will build towards defining shared principles for sustaining feminist technology, grounded in the experiences and conversations in the room.
